This stupa said to have been built in early 9th century is a very unique structure indeed. Legend has it that this is one of the four Ashoka stupas built at
four cardinal directions of the city of Patan.
This stupa complex has many interesting monastic shrines and sculptures scattered in and around this area. One of the old courtyards situated to the south of
this stupa complex is called Karunamaya Chuka. A very popular legend has it that the first ever image of Karunamaya Bunga Dyo (Rato Machhendra) was shaped
right here in this historical courtyard.
