When originally constructed, this large courtyard was formed by 10 houses on each side. Alternative houses were recessed by several inches so that on each side 5 were forward and 5 set back. This feature is the origin of the Newari name, Nyakha (five) chuka (courtyards). This can still be seen in the south east corner.
